Emergency Care
When something happens with your braces, it’s important to know what steps to take to avoid delays in your treatment. While some mishaps can be fixed with common household items, others may require you to come to our office and have them straightened out right away.
True orthodontic emergencies are rare – but when they happen, there is usually an easy solution you can achieve from home. While there are many issues that can be easily solved at home, the following issues consist of true orthodontic emergencies:
- An injury or trauma to the mouth, teeth, or face
- Infected gums or other parts of the mouth
- Severe pain
If any of these apply, consult with us as soon as possible.
Ways To Prevent Orthodontic Emergencies
Storing A Removable Appliance or Retainer
A removable appliance or retainer is only safe in two places. In your mouth or in your retainer case. Never place them in a purse, pocket or anywhere else where they can be damaged.
Removing An Appliance or Retainer When Eating Out
When eating out it is recommended that you remove your retainer. All too often the retainer case is not available. Please, do not wrap the retainer in a tissue or napkin. This eventually results in the retainer being discarded.
Removing Headgear
When removing your headgear, always disconnect the strap prior to removing the metal facebow. Failure to disconnect the strap could lead to serious injury.
